Club History:
Prefer Dirt started as a few friends making a pit bike track at one of
the guys’ future home site. A local peewee racer
was invited over to practice on the track and as with most things, word
spread and more kids started showing up to ride
the pit bike track. Along with riding pit bikes, the guys started
working with
the young riders to develop skill and got
a real sense of satisfaction seeing the riders’ progress.
The pit bike
track started seeing more use from kids as a practice
track. The kids riding together started becoming friends,
helped push each other in riding
skills and were very encouraging
of one another. The parents
liked the fact that their young riders weren’t forced to ride in the
dangerous gravel pits and
were interaction with other kids with similar interest.
The time we dreaded came as our gracious host started
construction. Left without a practice track to ride on,
some of
the original pit bike guys and the parents came together in the summer
of 2009. It
was decided that the Prefer Dirt MX
was to be officially formed with the intention of finding a new place
to ride as a group.
The summer and fall 2009 the club went into a organization mode by
nominated directors, developing By-laws, becoming
incorporated, holding a fund raiser and started the search for a place
of our own and holding regular monthly business
meetings.
While working towards the goal of our own track, we became acquainted
with a local Vet expert rider and his family, who
opened their arms to the club. In the winter of 2010 some
club
officers visited their existing track and started discussing a
deal
that would allow the club to ride. In the early spring of
2010 members
of Prefer Dirt MX along with the land owner’s
family and friends started existing track improvements that resulted in
a practice track
that could put many race tracks to shame.
Currently the club holds exclusive weekly rides (Wednesday nights) on
this track. We have monthly track maintenance/
lunch/ride parties on one Saturday a month. The Club has been
established mainly
for development of youth riders and
racers 50cc to 150cc with limited memberships for full size
bikes. We
attend national races and participate at local races
as a group and
will be holding a members only Gary Bailey Motocross School this
summer. Members
are eligible for parts
and accessory discounts from Extreme Power sports in Kinderhook.
Our club membership is continually growing; however of idealism of
developing young rider’s skills, with safety and
camaraderie in mind remain and will be just important in the clubs
future as it is
today.
